A Love Like That

Even
after
all this time
The sun never says to the earth,

"You owe me"

Look
what happens
with a love like that -

It lights the whole
world.

 - Hafiz, "The Sun Never Says"

In our capitalistic society, the Love described by Hafiz may feel foreign to us; yet, in this kind of giving with asking nothing in return, we are free to be and to grow and to flourish in our beauty.

Imagine a world where we get to bear witness to another's evolution along their journey - to hear their questions and failures, their learnings and joys - and to whisper in response only, "thank you.”

Imagine a world where we replaced transactional love with unselfish love?*

Invitation

What will you receive in the stillness of a Love like this? What can you offer as you open yourself to be a channel of this Love to the world?

*Too often, I have heard stories where people have offered love in a way that seemed unselfish but did so in the context of unhealthy relationships and unhealthy boundaries. I want to be clear in saying: this behavior frequently supports dynamics of abuse and is not love.

In my own story, I can say that my behaviors - behaviors I thought were “unconditional love” or “selfless love” - were actually signs of codependency and were steeped in the belief that I was not worthy of love or belonging. I attended to the feelings of others at the expense of my own. I put other people’s needs first at the expense of my own. Underlying all of these behaviors was fear, not love.
